Young children develop within the context of their families, neighborhoods and communities – all of which influence their readiness for school. The National Education Goals Panel define school readiness as:
- Children’s readiness to enter school – which includes the five dimensions of overall health and development (physical health and well-being, social-emotional development, approaches to learning, language and literacy development, and cognition and general knowledge)
- School’s readiness for all children – which encompasses the 10 indicators of ready schools – including the role that schools should play in smoothing transitions between home and school, and promoting continuity between child care/preschool programs and schools
- Family and community supports that contribute to the readiness of children – which includes access to a variety of medical, educational and support resources
