District Preschool Programs

Program Curriculum

The preschool program is designed to meet the developmental needs of the whole child and the curriculum includes six basic areas of early childhood development:

  1. Social/emotional development: learning to cooperate, share, take turns and express emotions.
  2. Language development: learning to listen to others and to use language to communicate.
  3. Small motor development: small muscle groups of the hands involved in coloring, writing, stringing beads, cutting and turning pages.
  4. Conceptual development: concepts such as same and different, colors, sizes, shapes, and introduction to numbers and letters.
  5. Large muscle development: large groups of muscles involved in running, skipping, swinging and jumping.
  6. Self help skills: learning to be independent, clean up, button and zip.
Hockinson Preschool

The program serves 3 and 4 year olds of all needs and abilities who reside within the Hockinson School District boundary area. Children who qualify for special education receive services at no cost while the families of other children pay a monthly tuition. The preschool program is offered in partnership between the ESD and the school district which provides classroom space on the grounds of the primary school.

Kalama-La Center-Ridgefield Developmental Preschool

Developmental Preschool is supported by special education state and federal funds and specializes in serving children with a variety of developmental needs in the area(s) of communication, gross motor, fine motor pre-academic and personal-social skills. Children must be evaluated by the pre-school coordinator or other qualified support staff to determine eligibility for pre-school services based on state and federal educational requirements.

Children must be evaluated by the pre-school coordinator or other qualified support staff to determine eligibility for pre-school services based on state and federal educational requirements. ECEAP is a program that provides free services and support to eligible children and their families and is funded by Washington State and supports this program to help ensure that all Washington children who enter kindergarten are ready to succeed. Families who participate receive the preschool program, family support and parent training, as well as child health coordination and nutrition information.
